The perfect summer skincare regimen does exist + we're here to tell you all about it!
Happy end-of-summer PENZONE fam! I’m Alia– an Esthetician + Makeup Artist at PENZONE Polaris. Today I’m going to walk you through the perfect summer skincare regimen. I can’t wait for you to try these goodies!
First things first, do you know you should be switching your products as the seasons change? Yes, you read that right, this is something we should all be doing! Different times of year call for different skincare needs.
Here are three good rules of thumb I like to follow during the summer + as it’s wrapping up–
- “Lighten” up your skincare products.
- Bump up your exfoliation.
- Protect your skin from the summertime sun.
When I talk about “lightening” up your skincare, I mean that you need to take those heavy//nourishing products out of your regimen and mix in some light + refreshing products. Why? Well it’s simple, you wouldn’t want to be wearing your winter snowsuit in the middle of summer, same goes for skincare. There is simply no need for those heavier products, and by applying those, you’re creating problems in the form of excess oil, possible breakouts and congestion in the skin. So ditch the snowsuit, get the cute sundress out and lighten up those products!
bump it up.
Next, you’ll want to bump up your exfoliation. The reasoning for this is because in the summer there is a lot of extra debris. Whether it’s excess oil consumption, sweat, or pollution, taking the time to increase your exfoliation can help you stay on top of that.
Last one– PROTECT your skin! Yes the sun is amazing, and I am not saying to skip out on enjoying beautiful sunny days, but if you do, please protect your skin. If I were to recommend one thing (and one thing, only!) for a skincare regimen, it would be sunscreen. I promise you that it’s way easier to prevent damage to the skin than it is to try and reverse the damage. So, SPF it is!
To help guide you to the perfect summer skincare regimen, I’ve included a list of my fave products and given you the scoop on why to use them, how to use them + how often. The list goes in order of how they should be applied– take a look!
Cleansing the skin is crucial, especially in the summertime! To get all the debris of the day off, I like to do a double cleanse method. Using a gel based, gentle exfoliating, foam wash.
PRODUCT REC: Jan Marini Clean Zyme. This cleanser has proteolytic enzymes that gently resurface the skin, revealing fresh, new skin. This product is good for ALL skin types. It’s gentle, yet highly effective.
HOW TO USE: Take a pearl sized amount + massage it into the face. Try and leave it on the skin for 1-2 minutes to let the enzymes do their job. Then gently rinse off with water. You can use this product morning and night.
PRICE: This cleanser retails for $32 for a 4oz bottle. This size should last you 3-4 months, using it morning + night every single day of the week.
Like I said before, exfoliating a little extra in the summer months can help get rid of the extra debris we accumulate during this time.
PRODUCT REC: Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel Pads. These peel pads are easy to use, and they can actually be used daily. They’re filled with AHA/BHAs that lift away dead skin. You’ll also find antioxidants and vitamins to help protect and nourish the skin. This product will have the texture of your skin feeling softer, smooth out fine lines and even out your skin tone in no time. These peel pads are good for normal to combination skin types. They also offer an ultra-gentle version for those prone to sensitive//dry skin.
HOW TO USE: For optimal results, use these daily. I prefer using these in my morning routine, it’s a perfect way to prime your face for an amazing makeup application. Massage step 1 on a dry, clean face. Leaving it on for 1-2 minutes. Then, do the same thing for step 2. Viola!
PRICE: This product retails for $88. The box comes with 30 packs, giving you a months worth of product if you’re using it every day + all I can say is that the results are WELL worth it. If you want to extend the longevity of the product, you can switch to applying every other day, giving you two months worth of product.
During summer, I like to use a lighter, oil-free moisturizer. This is an example of what I meant when I said to “lighten” up your skincare. The importance of this product is to help fight against dryness and dehydration, signs of aging and environmental damage.
PRODUCT REC: Dr. Dennis Gross Hyaluronic Marine oil-free Moisture Cushion. This moisturizer has a cooling experience to it, perfect for those hot days. Most importantly, it’s filled with essential amino acids and B vitamins to enhance the skin’s elasticity and moisture content. It’s also very lightweight, which is key for the summer. And, it’s perfect for ALL skin types.
HOW TO USE: Take a pearl sized amount of this product and massage it on dry, freshly cleansed skin. It should be used morning and night.
PRICE: The moisturizer retails for $60 for a 1.7oz jar. This size should give you 2-3 months worth of product, using it everyday, twice a day.
The most important thing of all is SPF. If you take anything (anything at all!) away from this, please let it be that you should be using an SPF year round. It is especially crucial in the summer months. Use this to protect your skin from sun damage. Sun damage can lead to wrinkles, dark spots and so many other problems. UV exposure is 80% of the reason behind skin aging. So prevent the damage from happening with an SPF, versus trying to reverse the damage after the fact.
PRODUCT REC: Jan Marini Antioxidant Daily Face Protectant SPF 33. This sunscreen is amazing. It’s water-resistant and protects you from both UVA and UVB rays. Unlike most sunscreens, this is super light-weight and has oil-controlling technology. All while simultaneously keeping the skin hydrated as well. It’s perfect for ALL skin types.
HOW TO USE: Apply only in the morning, 15 minutes before sun exposure. Use about a penny-sized amount worth of product. This needs to be the last product of your skincare regimen.
PRICE: This SPF retails for $53 for a 2oz bottle of product. This size should give you 2-3 months of product using it once a day.
